Active ReleaseTechnique (A.R.T.) is a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue treatment system (see: www.activerelease.com ). It is one of the most comprehensive, sophisticated and highly effective technique systems that significantly shortens the time for healing of most of pain and injury to our muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, as well as pinched nerves.
ActiveReleaseTechnique is known to be highly effective for the following conditions and many more:
Headaches: including tension headaches and migraines
Neck pain: including strain, sprain, whiplash, arthritic pain, early stage disc bulge
These conditions, and many more, can be resolved very quickly and effectively with A.R.T. There is one very important common thread for all of the above conditions: they all result from injury to over-used soft tissues: muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascias, or joint capsules.
How do over-use injuries occur?
Over-use injuries are typically caused by one of the following three reasons:
1. Acute injuries (tears, pulls, strains, sprains, contusions, collisions, etc), usually with acute pain and bruises, as what is often seen with sports injuries, falls, and accidents.
2. Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma), or so-called repetitive trauma injury, over a period of time, which often occurs with repeated simple motions such as typing, bending, lifting, driving, etc. This type of injury also commonly occurs with inappropriate use of muscles and joints, during daily activities or sports activities.
3. Not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia) to the tissue, which results in slow but steady scar tissue build-up.
We usually associate pain, injuries, or scar tissues with acute trauma or laceration. In fact, the majority of pain, injury and scar tissues are caused by the latter two reasons: repetitive micro-trauma injury or lack of oxygen to the affected tissues.
Any of these 3 factors cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissues in the affected areas. For normal movements to occur, our soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, joint capsules) need to freely move or glide against each other and within themselves. But these scar tissues, which are irregular in shape, bind up these soft tissue fibers and prevent the smooth movement and gliding to occur.
Muscles are elastic structures (through muscle fiber gliding), and they are attached to bones through inelastic tendons which do not stretch. It is the elasticity that allows us to contract the muscles and move our body parts.
As scar tissue builds up within, muscles become shorter, weaker, stiffer, and lose their elasticity. When the muscles become too short and lose their elasticity, the corresponding inelastic tendons are overworked and forced to be over-stretched beyond their range. The result is often tendonitis and other pain conditions.
Build-up of scar tissues within or between muscles and tendons cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. Since our peripheral nerves also course along the fascia and between muscles and tendons, they can easily become trapped by the scar tissues as well. The feelings of numbness, tingling, nerve pain or weakness are tell-tale signs of nerve entrapment.
Fortunately, these pains and discomforts can all be quickly and effectively removed with the Active Release Technique.
How can A.R.T. help?
Active ReleaseTechnique is a very comprehensive and sophisticated soft tissue treatment system. Every single muscle and peripheral nerve of the body has a specific protocol for treatment, which amounts to over 500 procedures.
At Action Chiropractic & Wellness Center, every ART session is a unique experience of assessment, examination and treatment to relieve your pain and suffering. Our experienced and highly trained A.R.T. doctors use their hands to evaluate the exact location, texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments or nerves that are involved with your symptoms. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining laser-sharp precision, most effective tension as well as very specific movements of the body, either actively performed by the patients themselves or induced by the doctor.
These treatment protocols - over 500 specific moves - are unique to A.R.T. They allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. There are no generic or cookie-cutter approaches in A.R.T. treatment, even for patients who have the same symptoms and pain.
This is because even for the same type of pain, the root cause of the problem may well be different for each patient, based on the individual Bio-Mechanical diagnosis that precisely fits each individual.
